Low-CL resonators for ultra Low Power Microcontrollers
0. Welcome to the Seiko Instruments Low-CL world! ( 11/05/2009 )
Seiko Instruments is working towards building a new market. As part of these efforts, we have developed solutions for reducing the current consumed by 32 kHz crystal oscillation circuits to strengthen our collaboration with semiconductor manufacturers and contribute to greatly reducing the standby power consumed during standby operation.
We have targeted various markets for battery-powered electronic devices in particular, and our technological efforts (low CL resonator solutions) related to increasing the life and usage time of batteries, issues that will become increasingly important, are introduced below.
Introduction
During the efforts by microcontroller corporations to achieve ultra low power consumption, a rich lineup of microcontroller products optimized for battery-powered electronic devices has emerged, and the features and performance of such microcontrollers have become clear. Now, in addition to reducing the standby power consumed during standby operation, a requirement for increasing battery life, achieving ultra low power consumption in the normal operation mode by intermittently operating is being prioritized. Furthermore, microcontrollers that contain low-speed 30 kHz oscillation clocks (watchdog timers: WDT) that consume a standby current as little as 0.7 uA or less, enabling batteries to be used for long periods of time (10 years or more), are now in practical use.
At the same time, we believe that it is possible to contribute to increasing the usage time of batteries (to 10 years or more) by making the minimum goal for reducing the standby power consumed during standby operation by RTCs (real time clocks) that use tuning fork crystal resonators a current consumption of 0.1 uA or less by the 32 kHz crystal oscillation circuit (standby current = 32 kHz oscillation + RTC + other components < 0.7 uA).
Developing low CL resonator solutions
We consider contributing to greatly reducing the standby power consumed by an RTC during standby operation (to 0.7 uA at 1.8 V) to be a top priority issue, and we therefore established a goal of 0.1 uA or less at 1.8 V for the amount of current consumed by our 32 kHz crystal oscillation circuits. To put such oscillation circuits into practical use, we have developed low CL resonator products specially designed for ultra low power microcontrollers.
